Friends of The Endocrine Society,
The prevalence of obesity in the United States – in
both adults and children – is increasing at an alarming rate. Currently,
thirty percent of the population is considered obese and almost two-thirds
are classified as overweight. We clearly have a health crisis on our
hands.
Combating this crisis requires a multi-pronged approach – one
that incorporates scientific research into the causes of obesity, patient
education, and collaborative patient care. The Endocrine Society and
The Hormone Foundation recognize the importance of addressing obesity
and the impact it has on the lives and overall health of Americans. Together,
our two organizations have developed this handbook to provide you with
a comprehensive, easy-to-use resource that outlines the scope of the
obesity problem facing our nation.
In this handbook you will find basic
facts and statistics on obesity, the role of endocrinology, exciting
new research findings and other resources
you can use. We encourage you to use the information and resources
in this handbook and we invite your questions on endocrinology and the
role
of endocrinologists in the fight against obesity.
Respectfully Yours,
E. Chester Ridgway, M.D.
